Happy New Year!

Or Happy… Year? I guess  2013 isn’t exactly “new” since a month has already come and gone. Happy Day After Groundhog Day? Happy Super Sunday!

And it has been far too long since I’ve even glanced at this poor blog. So I’ve decided to give your retinas a treat and share some work that I finished last year. The first pots with my new brown and “white” glazes!

The mixing bowl. I really like the form. I think it will become my standard mixing bowl shape where I can explore some surface decoration. I’ll try to post more about what went “wrong” later. The glaze didn’t turn out as white as expected.

These cups were special projects. I love the stamp based on the “Keep Calm” meme. The other cup is a tea mug which includes a tea bag holder on one side. I’ll continue to work with these ideas as well.

I like how this fat vase turned out. It has my two new brown glazes. The lighter brown turned out more of an amber color than expected (similar to the mixing bowl above). I added a few finger swipes when the glaze was still wet. Inspired by Hannah McAndrew, Doug Fitch, and other potters that I’ve seen comb, wipe, swipe and rub their slip. I like the shape. It’s probably around 10″ tall and it is wide enough to hold a big glob of flowers or other pretty things.

I’m most excited about the cups. Each one is like a little experiment. Both of the brown glazes turned out alright but I applied them a little too thick. If I get them on there thinner next time they should be less glossy. A nice satin or semi matte. Looking closely at the lighter brown (bottom left) allows you to see a few different colors that blend together to make the amber-brown. The dark brown also has some interesting color play, almost like a layer of transparent blue over a dark brown. As for the form, they’re a little small but were great for trying some different textures.

I also mixed up two different blue glazes. This one is aptly named Charger Blue. It is somewhat transparent but more saturated than the Sapphire blue I bought from Coyote. I also made a navy blue but I guess you’ll have to check out at the Art By Fuzzy Page on Facebook since I didn’t upload it here.

Thanks for viewing! Hopefully there will be some more posts very soon. So much content, so little time.
