Working with Decals

I’ve had a chance to try some more decals recently. This time on real pots, not just test tiles. I really like how they look on the Bone White from Mastering Cone 6 Glazes. Even though the Bone White is a little too yellow after a glaze fire with a normal cool down I really like how it looks after going through an extra bisque fire required to fire the decals onto the piece. It becomes less glossy and brighter white. It reminds me a little bit of old paper.

Father's Day Gifts

Father’s Day Gifts

These were a big hit during the Father’s Day festivities. I used black and white photos of Q and printed them off on decal paper. They came out pretty well. There is enough detail in the midtones to tell what the subject is but there are a few rough spots. Maybe if the glaze was more glossy the images would be a little smoother? It actually adds to the old paper look.

Glazing Pots, Adjusting Glazes

Who loves a three day weekend? I do! And so does my clay studio.

Another snow/ice day yesterday for me to stay home and work on pots. After a solid day of work Monday to go with my time in the studio over the weekend, I’m pretty close to finished with glazing this cycle of pots. I have a handful of pots that I want to spray with glazes but I might wait and do that outside.

Happy New Year!

Or Happy… Year? I guess  2013 isn’t exactly “new” since a month has already come and gone. Happy Day After Groundhog Day? Happy Super Sunday!

And it has been far too long since I’ve even glanced at this poor blog. So I’ve decided to give your retinas a treat and share some work that I finished last year. The first pots with my new brown and “white” glazes!

The mixing bowl. I really like the form. I think it will become my standard mixing bowl shape where I can explore some surface decoration. I’ll try to post more about what went “wrong” later. The glaze didn’t turn out as white as expected.
